Squid Game took the entire world by storm after its debut in September 2021. Do you remember that time? It seemed like people forgot about other tv shows. They only had this Netflix series in their minds and recommendations. It leapt boundaries in terms of prominence and made viewers fall in love with it. Speaking of the show’s fans, we can add one more name to the list. This time, it’s none other than Steven Spielberg. After receiving sensational responses from viewers and critics, the South Korean series also managed to get high praises from the legendary helmer.
Spielberg recently spoke to Deadline about West Side Story. Additionally, he opened up about his thoughts on Squid Game. Here is what he said:
“Squid Game comes along and changes the math entirely for all of us,” Spielberg said. “Thank you, Ted. A long time ago it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies. Today, it’s interesting, unknown people can star entire miniseries, can be in movies.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk’s creation becoming a worldwide sensation was not an overnight procedure. It took about three weeks to attain the number one rank in over 90 countries. However, the world’s top streaming service is not very popular in China. But the show’s pirated version got distributed on a very high scale among the Chinese audience, resulting in the augmentation of its fame in the country.
Apart from Spielberg’s adulations, we also have some interesting details about the upcoming Season 2. Although, some of them may disappoint the show’s fans. How about we swallow the bitter pill first?
The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, was one of the guests at the PGA Awards ceremony. One of the reporters from Deadline asked the creator about the second season:
“There will be more great games, that’s all I can say. I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet,” Hwang replied.
Hwang’s statement will end up breaking the hearts of a lot of fans. It means that they will have to keep waiting for the return of their favourite Netflix series. But wait! The time has come to taste something sweet here. Some of the latest reports have hinted at HoYeon Jung’s return in the forthcoming sophomore entry. We know her character, Kang Sae-byeok, lost her life in the debut season. Still, the fans may see her coming back for Season 2 to play her twin sister.
Steven Spielberg’s next project, The Fabelmans, is scheduled to hit the theatres on November 23 this year. On the other hand, Squid Game Season is expected to come out in 2023-24.
