Eddie Munson (played by Joseph Quinn) instantly became a fan-favourite character after Stranger Things Season 4 premiered on Netflix. Despite showing signs of cowardice in the early stages of Season 4, Eddie won fans’ hearts by making the ultimate sacrifice in the finale to save Dustin. Apart from his heroic act, fans love his ‘freak’ behaviour and bromance with Dustin. Still, Eddie should not return to Stranger Things Season 5. Here’s why!
Joseph Quinn’s popularity soared after his eccentric yet heart-touching performance in Season 4 made the show’s fans fall in love with Eddie. His death was gruesome but also heroic and emotional, which is one of the reasons why many fans want him to return in Season 5. But that would be a mistake.
We have to give credit to the writing department of Stranger Things for creating Eddie Munson. His character was very well-written, given that he appeared in only one Stranger Things season. All of his classmates at school believed he was a ‘freak’, except his friends in the Hellfire Club. On the other hand, Dustin considered him an amazing and cool guy. Plus, his bond with Chrissy shows his kind and caring persona. As the fourth season went forward, we witnessed how he constantly struggled with his demons and later conquered them in the most ‘metal’ way possible. No one could have battled the monsters in the Upside Down with the help of Metallica songs except Eddie Munson.
That’s why bringing back Eddie in Stranger Things Season 5 would reduce the impact of his death. His sacrifice may end up losing its meaning and worth. His return would devalue his fantastic character arc in Season 4.
The absence of Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson doesn’t mean Stranger Things Season 5 will forget him. The new set photos show Gaten Matarazzo wearing a “Hellfire Club” t-shirt. It may be Dustin’s way of remembering Eddie and respecting his friendship with the late great leader of the Dungeons and Dragons club.

The above-mentioned set photos tease a scene of Dustin visiting Eddie’s vandalised gravesite in Stranger Things Season 5. His vandalised gravesite shows how people outside of the show’s gang hate him as they believe that he is a cult leader and is responsible for Chrissy’s tragic death. This scenario may force Dustin to prove Eddie’s innocence in the upcoming season.
The filming for Stranger Things Season 5 is well underway. It means that the final season may arrive on Netflix in late 2024 or early 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
