Stranger Things Season 4 focused more on Vecna’s origin story and his connection with Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven. Exploring these plot elements was important as they explained how the Upside Down functioned and what Vecna wanted from Eleven. Before Season 4, the show was mainly about Eleven and Mike. The former is a born psychic with powerful extrasensory and telekinetic abilities. On the other hand, Mike leads the kids’ group, which also consists of Dustin, Lucas, and Will. The Duffer Brothers have always treated Stranger Things as an ensemble show. But it was the duo of Mike and Eleven that was found at the centre of events before the fourth season.
Apart from the kids’ group, we also have several supporting characters in the show, some of whom have become fan-favourite. But it is none other than Will who deserves as much spotlight as Eleven and Mike.
Will Byers still shares a connection with the Upside Down. It is Will who has suffered the most in the show. And still, he shares a strange connection with the Mind Flayer and Vecna. In the last season’s finale, we clearly witnessed him feeling the presence of the Upside Down in Hawkins. It would not be surprising to see if Will takes the driver’s seat this time instead of Eleven or Mike in Season 5.
Many fans have theorised that Will may die in Season 5. This theory actually makes sense, as he shares a connection with the world of the Upside Down that is impossible to undo. He may end up sacrificing himself to save his friends and Hawkins from Vecna and the Upside Down. Plus, we know that Will secretly likes Mike, who loves Eleven deeply. Mike and Eleven are the show’s main couple. Disrupting their romance to give Will a chance with Mike does not make any sense at all.
It was Will’s disappearance that brought Lucas, Dustin, Mike, and Eleven close. Mike and Eleven’s relationship is built in the aftermath of Will’s disappearance. He was the one who accelerated the story with his disappearance. So, declaring him as the series’ main character does not seem outlandish at all.
