Film creates empathy and emotions; that’s the main purpose of art. Talking about it being flourished, “American Fiction” manages to check all the boxes and now stands as one of the strongest Oscar contenders of the year. And now, as it is streaming, you must have your answer to your question: do you need to stream it?
Plot-
Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a disillusioned Black professor and novelist, struggles to gain attention for his nuanced work. Frustrated by the publishing industry’s preference for stereotypical narratives about Black experiences, he hatches a daring plan.
He adopts the pen name “A.A. Stallworth” and writes a wildly exaggerated, satirical novel titled “Exhalation” that leans heavily into harmful stereotypes. He expects the book to be rejected, but to his shock, it becomes a runaway bestseller. Lauded by critics who miss the satire, Monk finds himself propelled into the literary spotlight, grappling with the ethical ramifications of his success.
While basking in the unexpected fame and fortune, Monk faces personal turmoil. His mother grapples with Alzheimer’s, his estranged brother navigates personal struggles, and the death of his sister throws him into emotional turmoil. As the farce of his “authentic” Black voice unravels, Monk is forced to confront his motivations, the industry’s exploitation, and the complex realities of representation.
