We are making a tradition indeed; every Sunday, we discover new Iranian films. This week, another Abbas Kiarostami film is under the radar. Known for its minimalistic style and down-to-earth vision, Kiarostami’s work is gaining global exposure.
If you’re with us on this journey, this week you should watch “The Wind Will Carry Us.”
The title itself is a homage to Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad, which is enough to pique interest in the craft. The response “The Wind Will Carry Us” received was as consistent as any Kiarostami film; it is no exception in that regard.
The cast also does a phenomenal job. Behzad Dorani as Behzad nails the role. Noghre Asadi, Roushan Karam, Bahman Ghobadi, and Shahpour Ghobadi also shine.
The plot is quite astounding. It follows a Tehran engineer and his team who visit a remote Kurdish village to document local funeral rituals. As they wait for an elderly woman to die, the protagonist becomes immersed in the villagers’ lives, leading to introspection and a profound connection with the village’s rhythms and customs.
The film explores themes of life, death, and cultural observation, typical of a Kiarostami film.
“The Wind Will Carry Us” is streaming on Mubi India.
