“Por,” the latest movie by director Bejoy Nambiar debuted on Netflix without much buzz. It runs for about 2 hours and 33 minutes and takes us into the lives of students at a very cool college in Pondicherry.
The movie shows us all the different kinds of fights: like students standing up for fairness and equality, or someone trying to reclaim their dominance after facing abuse. It also looks at the tricky balance between politics and personal relationships. The cast features actors like Arjun Das, Kalidas Jayaram, TJ Bhanu, and Sanchana Natarajan.
However, early reviews were not too positive. Maybe because the movie focuses too much on a clash between two stubborn men played by Arjun Das and Kalidas Jayaram. Ultra-stylish fights became the main highlight of the film and the story was left somewhere behind.
Despite its flaws, “Por” has some good moments. It brings attention to important social issues and shows the ups and downs of human relationships. Nambiar, along with writers Neil Julian Balthazar and Mithila Hegde, creates characters who are dealing with their pasts while trying to make things better.
Netflix India’s decision to release “Por” without much promotion might suggest they weren’t sure how well it would do. Already there is too much going on at Netflix India with Heeramandi, Chamkila and even The Great Indian Kapil Show. In this big slate of originals, they might have skipped to promote the film.
