Well, James Gunn has found his Superman! David Corenswet! Many of you may not be familiar with his name or his performances. And above all, you all must be thinking, “Will he be able to perfectly embody the character of Superman?”. People on social media have discussed this matter in great depth. Some say he is perfect, while others have doubts about him. Many have also compared the man with Henry Cavill. Although, we can all agree that casting a perfect actor to portray a globally prominent superhero character takes work.
James Gunn’s DCU will officially commence with Superman: Legacy. Its predecessor, DCEU, started its journey with a Superman project as well, Man of Steel (2013). MOS gave an action-packed but messy start to DCEU. But we should expect something different from ‘Legacy’, given that the film will be helmed by Gunn himself. And this time, we have David Corenswet, who surprisingly looks very similar to several comic book adaptations of the superhero character. But, at the end of the day, he is an actor. And his performance will decide whether he is fit to play the character or not.
After confirming the casting of Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Gunn assessed that both are “not only incredible actors but also wonderful people”.
Corenswet’s casting has surprised many fans, considering James Gunn’s habit of casting his favourite performers in his projects. But his casting has certainly followed the trend of all live-action Superman actors, who were not popular until they put on the iconic red cape.
Corenswet is 29 and has starred in a handful of projects, such as Ti West’s Pearl and HBO’s We Own This City series. On the other hand, we have Brosnahan, who became popular after starring in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. However, the problem does not lie with his limited acting experience. It lies with who he is replacing. He possesses several key Superman features, such as dark hair, a lantern-shaped jaw and curly hair. But what he lacks is Henry Cavill’s muscular persona. He needs to work on that.
Like it or not, Corenswet’s Superman will always live in the shadow of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. The former cannot escape from that. He will always be compared with Cavill’s take on the iconic superhero character until he does something extraordinary with the character.
DC needs a perfect Superman to start DCU, just like what Marvel did with MCU. The latter studio played a huge gamble on Robert Downey Jr for Iron Man (2008). But the gamble paid off, thanks to the actor’s mesmerising and entertaining take on the character. DCU needs something like this from Superman: Legacy and from David Corenswet.
Is David Corenswet the perfect guy to play Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy? A lot depends on how perfectly he captures the spirit of Superman in the upcoming James Gunn directional. Corenswet is a great talent and treasures the potential to do complete justice to the character. Stay tuned for more updates.
