‘Superman: Legacy‘ recently added four new members to its cast apart from its leading duo, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), and Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern) are the latest additions to the upcoming DCU film. Gathegi also played Armando Munoz, aka Darwin, in 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men: First Class’ (2011), helmed by Matthew Vaughn.
Darwin can evolve according to his surroundings, making him able to survive any threat. For instance, he can grow gills underwater or become flame retardant against fire. He could have established himself as one of the most important members of Charles Xavier’s X-Men. Sadly, he dies in First Class.
Darwin’s death scene is one of the most controversial scenes in ‘X-Men: First Class’ as it makes no sense at all. Alex Summers, aka Havok, attacks the villainous Sebastian Shaw with an energy blast. However, the latter comfortably absorbs the blast and puts it into Darwin’s mouth. This scenario forces Darwin’s body to mutate and adapt to the energy of the blast. Sadly, the blast’s energy destroys him as he gains a rocky appearance. This scene faced a huge backlash from fans as it did not make any sense considering Darwin’s exceptional abilities. The film hails him as a mutant who can adapt to any environment around him. Yet, we witness his death.
Mister Terrific is not a globally prominent superhero. But he is an important part of DC comics. His real name is Michael Hoult. He is considered the third-smartest man in the world. In addition, he is capable of coming up with extraordinary inventions. In the comics, he is an important member of the Justice Society of America and has connections with the Justice League.
Gathegi’s inclusion as Mister Terrific indicates that fans may witness the Justice Society in ‘Superman: Legacy’. The trio of Metamorpho, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl have also been depicted as members of the JSA in the comics. Even Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) attempts to secure the place of Shazam (Zachary Levi) in the superhero faction in Fury of the Gods’ mid-credits scene. All these things indicate the potential introduction of the JSA in the forthcoming Superman project.
We hope that James Gunn does complete justice to Edi Gathegi’s Mister Fantastic in ‘Superman: Legacy’. Stay tuned for more updates.
