In a surprise of sorts for his huge legion of fans, Indian stand-up comic Kanan Gill plays the lead in Netflix’s upcoming holiday rom-com. Another surprise in the tale is that Kanan Gill’s Netflix film is not a Hindi film, or even an English one, for that matter. It is — hold your breath — a Norwegian film! Fancy that!
The Netflix original film headlined by Kanan Gill is titled ‘Christmas As Usual’. It is one among the numerous films that Netflix premieres as part of its Christmas rom-coms slate. ‘Christmas As Usual’ is Norwegian, and its original title is ‘Så Var Det Jul Igjen’.
Besides Kanan Gill, ‘Christmas As Usual’ stars Norwegian actor Ida Ursin-Holm as co-lead, along with Marit Adeleide Andreassen in a pivotal role, among other actors. The romantic comedy film is written and directed by Petter Holmsen, and produced by Norwegian film production company, Motion Blur.
The official synopsis of ‘Christmas As Usual’ reads, “Thea is going back to her rural hometown in order to celebrate a classic Norwegian Christmas with her family, but this year she’s bringing along Jashan, her Indian boyfriend. What was supposed to be Christmas as usual, turns into a tumultuous and heartwarming festive period that will put everyone’s preconceived beliefs and traditions on their heads.”
To say that Kanan Gill is popular in India is a definite understatement. The comic’s stand up comedy shows are regularly sold out in the country and abroad. He has his own comedy specials on both streaming giants, Netflix and Prime Video. He’s especially popular amongst millennials, who simply love his dry wit and sarcastic humour.
‘Christmas As Usual’ is certainly a film to watch out for, for Kanan Gill fans. The romantic comedy premieres on Netflix worldwide on 6th December, 2023.
