In a piece of fantastic news for fans of legendary Indian fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi, another film on the famous sleuth is being made for the big screen. The movie will be directed by Kolkata-born actor-director Arindam Sil.
The upcoming film will feature Bengali actor Abir Chatterjee, Sohini Sarkar, and Suhotra Mukhopadhyay in the roles of Byomkesh Bakshi, his spouse Satyabati, and Byomkesh Bakshi’s companion Ajit, respectively.
This is not the first time for either Arindam Sil, Abir Chatterjee, or Sohini Sarkar that they are involved in a film based on Byomkesh Bakshi. Abir Chatterjee, for instance, first starred as Byomkesh Bakshi in the 2010 movie of the same name followed by six more films in the titular role. While Arindam Sil has previously directed three Byomkesh Bakshi films – all starring Abir Chatterjee.
The filming schedule for the latest Byomkesh Bakshi-based film is expected to commence soon. Based on an incomplete story ‘Bishupal Bodh’ by Sharadindu Bandopadhyay, the film is being described as a murder mystery set against the backdrop of the turbulent Naxalite uprising in Bengal in 1971.
The film’s story is about the protagonist Byomkesh Bakshi, who witnesses a complex crime while attending a play in a theatre. How he unfolds the mystery comprising love, betrayal, and infidelity would ostensibly form the rest of the film’s plot.
Earlier too, Byomkesh Bakshi-based stories have been adapted into several films and television series. This includes Basu Chatterjee’s immensely popular 90s show ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ starring Rajit Kapoor in the titular role.
Moreover, late actor Sushant Singh Rajput had also stepped into the shoes of the brilliant detective for Dibakar Bannerjee’s deftly executed film ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’ back in 2015.
