Rom-Coms… Amazing enough for romance lovers but pathetic for so-called diehard “true cinema” fans. Just kidding, folks! Every movie works as long as its heart is in the right place, right? The genre has indeed lost a significant amount of momentum in the last few years. Still, there are some people who love rom-com projects with all their hearts. Netflix understands this scenario. This is why the streaming giant constantly delivers enjoyable rom-coms to its viewers. And we have also encountered a heartwarming romantic comedy on the platform. Its name is Candy Jar (2018).
Candy Jar is one of the best teen rom-coms you have never watched. It revolves around Bennett (Jacob Latimore) and Lona (Sami Gayle), a couple of high school debate champions who are forced to team up for the state-level debate championship. Along the way, the duo encounters several academic and personal dilemmas that test their dedication to each other and their shared goal. However, the two of them find out they have a lot in common despite their highly noticeable differences. This scenario becomes intriguing after they start having feelings for each other.
In terms of storytelling, Candy Jar is no groundbreaker. Several critics have pointed out its formulaic teen rom-com plot. But the flick stands out because of its heartwarming tone and committed performances. Additionally, it perfectly explores the highly competitive environment of high schools. The performances of Christina Hendricks and Uzo Aduba stand out in this one. Academy-award winner, Helen Hunt, is also a part of this simple yet beautiful film.
Despite being formulaic, many rom-coms provide an escape from reality, bestowing a chance for viewers to immerse themselves in a world far away from their real-life problems. And when they successfully hit all the right emotional notes, boom, you have a wonderful rom-com. Candy Jar does all of these things.
Candy Jar is far from being called a cinematic masterpiece. But it will surely touch the strings of your heart. Stream it on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
