Tamannaah’s ‘Odela 2’ premiered on Prime Video on May 8th after completing it’s lacklustre theatrical run and fascinatingly the film has claimed the #1 spot on Prime Video for nine consecutive days since its digital debut, as claimed by the makers.
It was quite a struggle for ‘Odela 2’ in theatres where the film was hampered by mixed reviews criticizing its incoherent narrative, weak screenplay, sluggish pacing, was underdeveloped characters, over reliance on violence and familiar horror tropes. Infact, the film’s early shift to OTT, within 3 weeks instead of the standard 4 of its theatrical release, further underscored its commercial disappointment.
Critics also noted that despite Tamannaah’s compelling portrayal as Shiva Shakthi, a fierce Naaga Sadhu, and some visually engaging sequences, the film failed to captivate on the big screen.
But all the flaws have probably been overlooked by the OTT audience and ‘Odela 2’ has kind of found a new life on Prime Video. Reports claim it has clocked 100 million streaming minutes in just four days, highlighting the film’s appeal to OTT audiences.
Tamannaah’s transformative performance, coupled with the film’s atmospheric visuals and spiritual horror elements, has prabably found a higher resonance with home viewers who constantly seek genre-driven content, but it is also the multilingual release by Prime Video that has helped ‘Odela 2’ find a wider audience.
It has been a trend that films that falter in theaters often thrive on streaming platforms. We saw this recently with John Abraham’s The Diplomat’ too after its launch on Netflix. That’s likely because OTT audience sees content from a different lens than the theatre going folks. On the digital medium convenience and character-driven narratives are prioritised over cinematic spectacle. Moreover, OTT viewers are unbound by theatrical expectations and are rather more open to experimental experiences.
On the other hand, we cannot fully trust these claims of sustained #1 trending status by the makers and it definitely warrants scrutiny since OTT metrics can often be opaque. Regardless, ‘Odela 2’s OTT success is a textbook example of how streaming is so much more democratic where films can always come looking for that second chance.
