Suriya‘s ‘Jai Bhim’ could easily be called the most anticipated Tamil OTT release this month. The social legal drama featuring Suriya and Rajisha Vijayan in the lead, dropped on 2nd November and has become an instant hit. Bankrolled by Suriya and Jyothika under their production banner 2D Entertainment, the film is written and directed by journalist-turned-filmmaker TJ Gnanavel (of ‘Kootathil Oruthan’ fame). Critically acclaimed and widely appreciated by one and all, ‘Jai Bhim’ has topped the IMDb meter to claim the number one spot globally. The Suriya starrer is now the top IMDb rated movie with a score of 9.6, by an excess of fifty three thousand votes within just a week of its release! Consequently, the film has entered the IMDb list of the Top 250 movies of all time! It is also the first south Indian film to get a spot on the coveted list. As far Indian movies go, ‘Jai Bhim’ is the fourth to enter the IMDb list, at spot 181, the others being Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dangal’, Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer ‘Andhadhun’.
Based on true events from a 1993 legal battle, ‘Jai Bhim’ features Suriya in the role of a lawyer fighting for the rights of a tribal group. With a hard-hitting plotline and great performances, the film’s early reviews itself had it buzzing like no other. The film is without doubt a massive OTT success and its contribution to Indian cinema is indeed a matter of great pride.
