Top Tamil director Arivazhagan Venkatachalam will make his OTT debut with a thriller series for SonyLIV. Titled ‘TamilStalkers’, it is a series that will focus on the crippling issue of piracy in the Indian film and entertainment industry. As is obvious from the title of the show, the plot will be based somewhat on the shenanigans of the real-life piracy group, TamilRockers. The storyline will centre on the dark side of piracy, and its domino effect on Indian cinema, and recently, on the streaming industry as well.
Arivazhagan Venkatachalam is best known for his 2009 hit thriller film Eeram. The series will be created under the aegis of the well-known production house, AVM Productions. Arivazhagan launched the web series today, in the presence of Aruna Guhan and Aparna Guhan Shyam, head honchos of AVM Studios.
Film piracy has become a niggling and contentious issue for film producers and theatre owners. TamilRockers is a malicious website known for streaming pirated Bollywood, Tollywood and other regional movies online, within hours of their release.Theatrical collections are vastly hit because of pirated copies landing up online.
TamilRockers has become a particular nuisance for theatre owners because of the loss of business entailed because of the nefarious activities of the website. Taking action against the website is also a tough nut to crack. As soon as the website and its subsidiaries are taken down, within a few minutes, proxy URLs for the sites pop up in cyberspace.
Considering all of the above, TamilStalkers sure seems to be a web series that can shape into a cracker of a thriller, and worth looking out for. It will be interesting to see how Arivazhagan tackles the subject in his maiden web series. As of now, no other cast and crew has been announced.
