Theatres in Tamil Nadu can finally breathe a sigh of relief since it looks like their toughest days are over. Multiplexes and single screen theaters have been shut for almost 6 months post the second covid wave, though ever since they were allowed to reopen this week, all star studded ventures are making plans and locking dates for their theatrical releases. With a bunch of star-studded September releases, it looks like the theatre business may start revival within the first month of reopening itself.
Starting with the Vinayaka Chaturthi weekend, the theatrical releases lined up are Vijay Sethupathi starrer ‘Laabam‘ for the 9th of September and Kangana Ranaut‘s ‘Thalaivii‘, Vijay Anthony’s ‘Kodiyil Oruvan’ and Arun Vijay’s ‘Borrder’ for 10th September. Out of these, ‘Thalaivii’ and ‘Laabam’ are likely to see a big face-off, both being among the top anticipated releases. While the former starring Bollywood Queen Kangana Ranaut, is a biopic of late actress-turned-politician Jayalalithaa, the latter is a political thriller starring Sethupathi with Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu, Sai Dhanshika and Kalaiyarasan in pivotal roles. This is director S. P. Jananathan’s last film, being released posthumously. The makers of ‘Laabam’ have smartly gained a day’s advantage over ‘Thalaivii’ by waiting it out to announce its release. While actress Kangana Ranaut announced her film’s theatrical release 2days ago, the makers of ‘Laabam’ announced its release this evening at 5pm.
Apart from these films, actor Arya‘s ‘Aranmanai 3‘, Hiphop Tamizha Adhi’s ‘Sivakumarin Sabatham’, Rishi Richard’s ‘Rudra Thandavam’ are the other top releases locking their dates towards the end of the month. Indeed, the pioneer of it all, Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Bell Bottom’ needs a round of applause in being the trend-starter, despite theatres in the home state of Maharashtra being shut.
The month of October is also looking to be a blockbuster month with the ultimate clash between Ajith’s ‘Valimai‘ and the Arya-Vishal starrer ‘Enemy’. The two action flicks will see a super face-off for Dussehra on October 14th. All films have started with timely updates and solid promotional gimmicks to stay in the news, eyeing the top spot. It really looks like the theatre business is on the road to revival, so here’s wishing all the films concerned good luck!
