Thalaivii’s release was much limited, as major multiplex chains refused to release the movie on their screens due to the issues of the small window between theatrical and OTT releases. Thalaivii’s business in the Hindi regions was not up to the mark at all and collected a meagre 20-25 lakhs net when it was valued for much more than that. Delhi NCR region, Punjab, U.P., showed really low collections when the most were expected from these areas. Gujarat has been showing quite a bit of collection, more than the Northern parts of India, currently. Eastern India on the other hand has no specific, mind-blowing impact on the movie.
The only increase in collections for Thalaivii and great outcomes were seen from theatres showcasing the film in Tamil. The Tamil Nadu region made a huge impact on Thalaivii, even though it had massive competition from regional Tamil movies like “Labaam”. Andhra as well as Nizam regions haven’t shown any grand success, as “Seetimarr” has sealed the deal for the Telugu audience in this area. “Seetimarr”, in fact in general, has been doing a great business despite the post-pandemic scenario.
The only major impact in the Box Office collection for Thalaivii has been witnessed in the Tamil region. It is expected that since the movie portrays one of the greatest leaders of Tamil Nadu, the region will help in the theatrical business for the movie. Thalaivii, even though opened to great reviews from critics, people still aren’t impressed with the movie it seems, especially in the Hindi film markets. Thalaivii in total has earned 1.25 crores, out of which almost 80 Lakh came from the Tamil circuit.
The coming weekend will be crucial for the movie and it can turn into an example for the film industry too, regarding the “theatrical-digital release window”. The issue has forced big chains to not release the movie and this might become a deciding factor for the movie too. It is actually surprising to see a Kangana Ranaut movie not do well enough on the first day when it was never the case for her movies. Is it the appeal of the movie? The multiplex issues? Nothing can be made out currently regarding the low income in the Hindi circuits.
More shall be known as Thalaivii crosses the first weekend. Also, it will be interesting to see if really Thalaivii does well in the theatres or OTT. Now, only time will tell what shall be the future outcome for Kangana Ranaut’s “Thalaivii”.
