Kangana Ranaut‘s ambitious ‘Thalaivii’ is just a week away from its pan-India, theatrical release on 10th September, Ganesh Chaturthi. With the uncertainty surrounding the theatrical medium though, the filmmakers have locked the film’s OTT release too. As per latest reports, ‘Thalaivii‘ is all set to stream digitally, 4 weeks after its theatrical release. Apparently, the film will premiere digitally on both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, post its stint in theatres. The producers have just sorted out the issues and sealed the deal earlier today. Though it is being said that the movie will stream on Amazon Prime Video on the 8th of October, there is no news regarding the same for Netflix.
Producer Vishnu Vardhan Induri explaining the chosen business model for ‘Thalaivii’ had earlier said, “In times like these, box office collections can’t be taken as the benchmark for success; the only criteria should be the recovery of investment and making sure that the film is showcased to a large audience. The industry is going through a tough time and we can’t judge anyone for their decision. ‘Thalaivii’ is made for the big screens and we want to showcase our film in theatres first, but at the same time we definitely want to safeguard our investment through the non-theatrical deals”. With even the much-hyped Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Bell Bottom’ unable to do the numbers, it is no wonder that the makers are nervous and want to safeguard their interests. Getting a ‘U’ certification from the censor board will certainly help the scene, but the makers are still waiting with bated breath for theatres in Maharashtra to reopen.
Incidentally, the film that had been low on buzz for quite some time, suddenly saw promotional activities in full swing last week. After the release of the song ‘Teri Aankhon Mein’, a few teaser promos and behind-the-scene videos have been doing the rounds, mainly featuring the varied looks of lead stars, Kangana Ranaut and Arvind Swamy. Their dedication to replicate the looks of Jayalalitha and MGR respectively has been praised to the moon.
Directed by A L Vijay, ‘Thalaivii’, a biopic on late actress-turned-politician Jayalalithaa, is a multi-lingual film to be released simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The film also stars Madhoo and Bhagyashree in pivotal roles.
