Thangalaan has been one of the most promising films of the year, even drawing comparisons to Kantara in terms of greatness, which speaks volumes. The Tamil audience loved the film, but it had a very limited release in the North, with the Stree 2 fever partly to blame.
However, now that KKM and Vedaa are fading away and while Stree 2 fever is still present, it’s definitely slowing down. Hindi theatres need a strong second option for audiences. And what’s better than a tried-and-tested film from down South?
Thangalaan.
The Tamil box office grossed ₹48 crore, and if the Hindi dub gains some popularity, it could do wonders in the Hindi belt. Southern regional content is becoming increasingly popular as people feel Bollywood isn’t innovative enough.
Let’s evaluate the plot, shall we?
In 1850 CE, Thangalaan, a respected village chief in Veppur, embarks on a perilous quest for gold to free his family and community from debt bondage imposed by a zamindar and British officers.
Haunted by visions of Aarathi, a mystical protector, Thangalaan uncovers his past lives tied to the land’s gold. Despite immense hardship and loss, he eventually finds the gold, but only after pledging to use it solely for his community’s welfare. In a final act of defiance, Thangalaan kills the British officers, reclaiming the land for his people and securing their future.
A Hindi release was important to appeal to a broader audience. Subtitles usually work better on OTT, where you can rewind and watch scenes multiple times. But for theatrical releases, a Hindi version is crucial, as it’s understood by a large portion of Indians.
Releasing on 30th August, some might think it’s a bit delayed, but it’s a smart business decision. Whatever movie clashed with Stree 2 was overshadowed, and audiences in the North simply ignored it. So, a two-week delay was probably for the best, and if the makers can market it well, a magical box-office performance might be waiting in the North.
