Season 2 of the wonderful comedy thriller ‘The Afterparty‘ is now streaming on AppleTV+. The anthology series is created by Christopher Miller and the first season premiered in 2022.
Despite being an anthology, all the episodes of the first season were directed by Christopher Miller himself. But the second season offers something new. It is a story of a murder that happens in a school reunion and every episode deals with the detailings of the perspectives of each character, so despite being about the same night, the stories are hardly similar. In the second season, despite having a similar plotline, the treatment is highly experimental. The different episodes are directed by different filmmakers and the episodes are directed in highly contrasting and unique styles. The Hitchcockian black and white style and the colourful episode in the Wes Anderson style, the series goes on experimenting with style and treatment throughout the story. And it makes The Afterparty a hilarious comedy.
Such experiments are very necessary for the development of the medium. But unfortunately not many projects like this are coming. Few months back, the series ‘Kaleidoscope’ brought a very unique style. It had eight episodes and the episodes could be watched in any order, each giving a different climax. The sheer number of permutation combinations contributing to more than 500 endings, was a huge feat of storytelling. The Afterparty, indeed is a great venture in both comedies and thrillers, and it has offered something new for filmmakers to follow. We must congratulate AppleTV+ for such wonderful projects, and other platforms should bring originals that would experiment in the field of movies and web series.
