The Matt Reeves’ Batman universe has meticulous detailing and well-defined worldbuilding. and the credit for that goes to Reid himself. Who had a very certain thought in mind regarding his Batman and the trajectory he would take? While Nolan had already done a movie about the origins of Batman and a year-one story, Reeves chose to show the naive Bruce Wayne coming to terms with realities of his past and present. So the question is, what is the future of the dark knight?
Reeves has mentioned on a number of occasions how he always wanted the franchise to be a trilogy. And now that there’s a Penguin series taking place in the same universe, it does raise a question. “Has the trajectory changed?” In his latest interview, Reeves relieved the fans that the plans for the trilogy are still onboard.
Matt mentioned how the conception of Penguin was in accordance with his plans: “That was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s Story.” The series is in a way a follow-up to the events of the first movie and an entrée to the second one.
The separation of the series from the movies is perhaps a fresh take. It gives the showrunners ample space to flesh out the world while at the same time the “movies only” audience won’t really feel left out when the second movie comes up. Since we never see Bruce’s origins, these rogues can fill up the space needed to explore reeves iteration of Gotham.
