Warner Bros has revealed the theatrical runtime of The Batman with Robert Pattinson donning the cape and Matt Reeves at the helm. According to the latest reports, the upcoming DC project will have a runtime of 2 hours and 55 minutes, making it one of the longest superhero movies ever. Also, the film is coming out with a PG-13 rating. Superhero entries with longer runtime usually have worked quite well among the fans and in the theatres. Infinity War and Endgame are some of the best examples of this case. Can we expect the same from The Caped Crusader’s forthcoming instalment? Let’s delve deep into this scenario!
It seems like WB has finally realised that allowing long runtimes to superhero projects is not a horrible thing to do. Thanks to Zack Snyder’s cut! It clocked more than four hours and considered a massive improvement over ‘Josstice League’. We couldn’t have expected to get anything decent out of a 2-hour piece of crap with laughable reshoots and horrendous visuals. We hope you have not forgotten what Joss Whedon did to Henry Cavill’s handsome face in his stupid cut.
Anyway, let’s shift our attention to The Batman! Reeves has focused more on the vulnerable and emotional state of The Dark Knight this time. It is something that has never been done before. Even Christopher Nolan didn’t dare to touch the darker depths of Bruce Wayne’s soul in his trilogy.
The director, along with Peter Craig, has taken heavy inspiration from Year One (1987), The Long Halloween (1996-97), and Zero Year (2013-14) comic series for the movie’s plot. These storylines have never been displayed on the big screen by any filmmaker. That’s why the fans need a long runtime to absorb all the elements in the movie that served as an inspiration for the writers. Additionally, the trailers and TV spots of the film are enough to prove The Batman’s dark tone. Viewers cannot get their hands on all these things under two hours of theatrical time.
Plus, we have a sensational cast to look out for in The Batman! Pattinson grabbing the leading role caused an internet meltdown back in the summer of 2019. The actor received a severe backlash for his casting as The Dark Knight. But the DC FanDome teaser of the film ended up dropping the jaws of every Batman lover. The Vengeance instantly became fan-favourite, luring fans to crave more for Batman’s dark and “maniacally beating the hell out of a guy” persona.
In addition to Pattinson, we have acting talents like Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, and Paul Dano in the cast. All these sensational performers need big screen time to develop and bestow a worth to their respective characters. Plus, we cannot just take out the audience’s connection with these guys out of the equation. Fans deserve to get a proper look at Catwoman, Penguin, James Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and other notable Batman characters in the movie.
Furthermore, Dano’s Riddler may turn out to be a surprise package for the moviegoers. We have less than a couple of months for the film’s release now. Yet, we don’t know what to expect from Reeves’ Riddler. Several fan theories have predicted Dano to portray a ghastly, canny, and serial killing version of The Riddler in the upcoming DC project. Jim Carrey previously played the character with more dark humour and animation. These differences are enough to fascinate the fans about Edward Nashton.
Plus, Nashton knows about Bruce Wayne’s alter ego. It will be interesting to see how the former uses that to his advantage apart from disclosing the Wayne family’s secrets.
The Batman will come out in theatres on March 4 with Robert Pattinson in the lead.
