The festival de Cannes is the world’s most prestigious film and cultural event. However this year due to the COVID 19 pandemic situation around the world, the festival was cancelled like many other around the world. This year marks the 73 rd edition of the Cannes. The festival showcases shorts, documentaries, animations to feature films from all around the world creating a colourful map of cinema. The festival is also a highly renowned marketplace for productions and filmmakers to meet and distribute their films. Not long ago, it was announced that the festival will be entirely held through a virtual platform. For 5 days, starting from 22 nd of June to 26 th June, producers, distributors and filmmakers will get to select international films for further release. 1200 screenings have been organised which will feature discussions, presentations and pitch meetings. The festival will bring together 8500 participants, 60 pavilions and 2300 feature films for the market to buy. Interestingly enough, honourable minister for information and broadcasting of India, Prakash Javedkar virtually inaugurated the pavilion at the film market. Ananth mahadevan’s Marathi film ‘Mai Ghat Crime no 103/2005’ will be screened. Malayalam films ‘Katti Nrittam’ an adaptation of Mahabharata by Aneek Chaudhari and ‘Kaanthi’ tells the story of a mother and a visually challenged daughter by Asok R Nath are some films from Indian cinema to be representing our culture worldwide. To name a few of the virtual discussions to be held are between music composer Alexandre Desplat, Wes Anderson on their new film ‘the French dispatch’ and john Powell an English music composer. Chilean director Pablo Larrain and Efe Cakerel CEO of Mubi will also have a discussion on, “what does film stand for in a post pandemic world?”
Other discussions surroundings subject like the reach of art in other countries, financing, adapting work for at home audiences, myths about short film industry and more. There will also be online concert featuring Japanese musician and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto with American musician Laurie Anderson, Gabriel yared and many more.
