The Colossus of OTT platforms is indeed at stake as more and more creators push towards an ‘owning a physical copy’ model. This move by Disney exactly proves why creators are turning their heads.
Firstly, it was hit with a deal in terms of release like most content, but then Disney just wiped its release date off. Amidst the cloud of uncertainty built, the news came that Disney no longer wants to associate its name with the project.
As of now, the financer New Regency is looking for a new distributor. We can also expect a delayed release date as the makers won’t be able to promote the star-studded film.
As the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, though the actors are back to work, most of them will have a more hectic schedule than ever. So, promotion comes out as a big challenge, and amidst that, New Regency is even considering an OTT release.
New Regency can’t really afford another flop in the market, as their last venture, The Creator, managed to create more mess than greatness. With a budget of $80M, it just crossed $103M. The flop also managed to show the seven-year-long presidential reign of Michael Schaefer.
Disney postponed the wide theatrical release of “The Bikeriders” on Dec. 1, conflicting with Beyoncé’s Renaissance concert film in AMC theaters. The latter, not expected to match Taylor Swift’s success, anticipates a $20 million opening.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy, the film, based on Danny Lyon’s photographs, premiered at Telluride in September, with an Academy screening in October..
