The highly anticipated third season of Amazon Prime Video’s superhero series ‘The Boys’ premiered on the OTT platform on 3rd June and has been receiving rave reviews with a whopping 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Amidst all the accolades and praises being showered for the show’s various parameters, one aspect that stands out is Antony Starr’s performance as the megalomaniac superhero Homelander.
The impact of Antony Starr’s compelling performance was such that a large segment of critics and viewers strongly opined that it’s definitely an Emmy worthy performance. The nominations for this year’s Emmy awards will be announced tonight. However, Antony Starr’s sublime act won’t make it amongst the nominees for the 74th Emmy Awards.
And in case you’re wondering why, the reason is that ‘The Boys S3’ is not eligible to be nominated for this year’s Emmy Awards. Because the eligibility period set for the 74th Emmy Awards is only for those shows that were aired between 1st June 2021 and 31st May 2022.
And since ‘The Boys S3’ started streaming on Amazon Prime Video from 3rd June onwards, the show won’t be included in the Emmy Awards’ nominees list this year. This implies that ‘The Boys’ Season-3 will be eligible to be nominated for next year, that is, for the 75th Emmy Awards. Hence, no Emmy Award for Antony Starr’s performance as Homelander this year.
Besides ‘The Boys S3’, the aforementioned eligibility criteria set by the Television Academy also renders some premium shows such as the Emmy winning Netflix series ‘The Crown’, HBO’s ‘The Westworld’, Disney’s ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, etc., ineligible for Emmy 2022.
On the other hand, the shows which are expected to be listed as the nominees at the 74th Emmy include Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’, HBO’s ‘Succession’, Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ S4 Vol.1, AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul’ S6 Part-1, Apple’s ‘Severance’, Netflix’s ‘Ozark’, Apple’s ‘Ted Lasso’, HBO’s ‘Barry’, Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ and ‘Dopesick’, amongst others.
So, for Antony Starr’s Emmy nomination for his riveting portrayal as Homelander, ‘The Boys’ fans would have to wait until next year. And Starr’s nomination is a virtual certainty for the 75th Emmy Awards. Until then, it’s wait and watch.
