American novelist and short story writer Alice Walker scripted history when she became the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, back in 1982. She achieved this considerable feat for her world-renowned novel ‘The Color Purple’. Her other famous works include ‘Everyday Use’, ‘In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens’, ‘Possessing the Secret of Joy’, and more.
The epistolary novel follows Celie, the protagonist and narrator, who is a poor, uneducated, fourteen-year-old black girl living in rural Georgia. Torn apart from her sister and her children, she faces numerous hardships in life, including an abusive husband.
Backed by a sultry singer, Shug Avery, as well as her no-bullshit stepdaughter, Celie eventually finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a whole new type of sisterhood.
The most recent rendition of the classic was released theatrically in 2023. The musical drama featured a star-studded ensemble cast including Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Whoopi Goldberg, Danielle Brooks, Fantasia Barrino, in leading roles.
For those who missed catching it earlier, or for fans of the legendary author and her works, ‘The Color Purple’ (the 2023 musical) is all set to premiere exclusively on JioCinema on August 8!
Not only is this a historically relevant masterpiece, it is a widely appreciated title that should not be missed!
