‘The Crown’ 5th Season to Start Filming in July With New Cast

The acclaimed and one of the most big-budget historical drama television series – ‘The Crown’, currently streaming on Netflix, revolves around the royal family and chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth-II from the year of her wedding until the modern times. The first season of the show started streaming from the year 2016 and the latest season four from November 2020 onwards.

As per a report by a leading entertainment website, the fifth season of the biographical drama ‘The Crown’ will commence filming in July this year. However, it is expected to be launched on the streaming platform sometime in 2022. This season will likely portray the royal family’s difficult period during the early 1990s.

Following the earlier trend, the fifth season will see new actors portraying the lead roles of Queen Elizabeth-II, Prince Philip, and Princess Margaret. In the forthcoming season, Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, and Elizabeth Debicki are set to essay the roles of Queen Elizabeth-II, Prince Phillip, Princess Margaret, and Princess Diana, respectively.

Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki was last seen in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi mind-bending film ‘Tenet’ and is known for her work in the multi-starrer film Widows (2018) and in the horror-drama television mini-series ‘The Kettering Incident’ (2016).

While BAFTA Award winner Imelda Staunton’s repertoire of work includes Vera Drake and Harry Potter films, Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce has previously featured in the 2017 film ‘The Wife’ along with Glenn Close, and more recently as one of the two Popes in the 2019 film ‘The Two Popes’ co-starring Anthony Hopkins.

Whereas, actress Lesley Manville has worked in films including Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Phantom Thread’ alongside ‘Lincoln’ actor Daniel Day-Lewis and earlier in the 2010 comedy-drama film ‘Another Year’.

‘The Crown’ is expected to conclude in the sixth season, which may possibly show events during the early 21st century period. Although the show has consistently been highly praised by critics and viewers alike, however at the same time, it was also on the receiving end of criticism pertaining to its alleged historical inaccuracies.

Nevertheless, fans of the series are waiting with bated breath for the penultimate season, which will hopefully replicate the successes of its predecessors.
