David Gordon Green’s eagerly anticipated sequel to the 1973 Academy Award-winning film ‘The Exorcist’ titled ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ will no longer release in theatres on Friday the 13th, that is, on 13th October 2023. In fact, the wait for ‘The Exorcist’ fans has been cut short by a week as the sequel will now be out on 6th October 2023.
And the apparent reason for the release date change for ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ is because the immensely buzzy Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour film is also releasing on 13th October. Taylor Swift’s new concert film has already grossed a whopping $10 million in ticket pre-sales.
The parent film ‘The Exorcist’ is considered to be the granddaddy of all horror films. It was based on William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name and helmed by William Friedkin. The film revolved around the demonic possession and subsequent exorcism of the 12-year-old child of a famous actress. It became the first horror film to be nominated for not one but ten Academy Awards, eventually winning two for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound categories.
On the other hand, ‘The Exorcist’ sequel ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ follows the story of a distressed couple whose two daughters have been possessed by a demonic entity. They take the help of Chris MacNeil, who had undergone similar experience many years back as the distressed actress-mother of a possessed child (played by Linda Blair). Chris MacNeil’s character was played by Ellen Burstyn in the original Exorcist movie.
Although the parent film ‘The Exorcist’ is still regarded as arguably the greatest horror movie of all time, its sequels and prequels were unable to surpass the legacy created by the first film. So, it would be interesting to see whether ‘The Exorcist’ sequel ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ will prove to be a worthy tribute to the cult 1973 film.
