The Fall Guy’s opening weekend collections are undoubtedly surprising and disheartening, especially for a film that serves as a perfect entertainer in every way: a perfect display of chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, a non-superhero story for adults, and most importantly, a movie with something for everyone.
The newest David Leitch feature was able to earn only $28.5 million in its opening weekend. As of May 6, the film’s worldwide collections stood at $66.4 million, with $29.4 million coming from the US and Canada. So far, the movie has managed to earn back around half of its total budget, indicating that it may bomb at the box office.
Many experts believed last year’s ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon would aid The Fall Guy in passing with flying colours at the global box office. The leading man, Ryan Gosling, played Ken in Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed Barbie. On the other hand, Emily Blunt portrayed Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus, Oppenheimer. Given their individual successes, a collaboration between Blunt and Gosling seemed destined to work wonders for The Fall Guy.
The Fall Guy is a rare breed in today’s Hollywood. It gives us two amazing performers who banter and flirt with each other and get into different sorts of trouble to complete their mission. It does not insult our intelligence. And it damn sure does not force us to work hard. Which is why the real reason behind The Fall Guy’s low collections is hard to figure out.
Only a miracle now can save The Fall Guy at the box office. This month’s crowded release schedule, including big-budget projects like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 10), Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24), and The Garfield Movie (May 24), highlights the upcoming competition that may further divert audiences’ attention away from The Fall Guy. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
