Since the announcement of The Family Man Season 2, it’s been tangled with loads of controversies over communal angle. In January 2021, when another web series in Amazon Prime Videos, Tandav faced widespread criticism, The Season 2 of The Family Man pushed its scheduled release date from February to rework on their content to avoid controversies. But since the release of the trailer last week, a large portion of the viewers bashing the show for portraying Eelam Tamil community, associated with terrorism and roping a Tamil actress, Samantha Akkineni to cast as a terrorist. Just yesterday, things took an uglier turn when Tamil Nadu Government wrote to information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar to ban the release of The Family Man Season 2 across the country which is scheduled for 4th of June premiere citing communal angle.
Now, these criticisms met with mixed reactions from fans and the artists. But one of the very first to condemn this step of the TN government is Shreya Dhanwanthary, who portrayed Zoya in the first season on The Family Man 2. She took to her social media handle to express her disgust and anger over the demand of the ban. She directly questioned why the bans are easily demanded and given over a piece of art when corruption is being ignored along with lies. She also expressed anger on why every time these artists, comedians or shows get the harsh treatment from certain groups of people. She further added in another one of her tweets that demanding for ban of any content only shows that people are not willing to accept views or beliefs which may differ from others.
Needless to say, the tweet got a lot of reactions from the fans who mostly supported her views on the matter of banning The Family Man Season 2. Earlier in the letter written to the I&B minister, the TN government termed the show’s content as ‘condemnable, inappropriate and malicious’. They also mentioned, “Samantha as a terrorist in the serial is directly an attack on the pride of Tamils living around the world and no one will tolerate this kind of motivated and mischievous campaign”.
Since the day the controversies started shrouding around The Family Man Season 2, the actors and the makers kept a dignified silence around it and this is the first time, an actor from the show itself, expressed her disappointment over the constant bashing. We still don’t know how much bashing and pounding will The Family Man Season 2 have to go through before its release next week but now we can only hope for everything to get settled in a peaceful and calm manner.
Do check out the tweet by Shreya Dhanwanthary here:
Why are bans so freely demanded and given? We ignore corruption. We are okay with people telling us we dont need oxygen ‘cos we have lungs. We are okay with lies, floating bodies, massive statues and packed rallies. Yet we call for bans against comedians, shows, films & platforms
