The Family Man S2 Controversy: Is The Outrage Really Justified?

The Family Man S2 Controversy: Is The Outrage Really Justified?

After much delay and a lot of anticipation, the trailer and release date of The Family Man Season 2 was finally revealed last week and within no time, the series became a trending topic everywhere. The trailer looked exciting and it left fans thrilled to see not only Manoj Bajpayee back in action but also Samantha Akkineni kicking it out in the trailer.

But, then again The Family Man started getting embroiled in controversies one after the other. One specific allegation came from the Tamil fans as they took to their social media platforms and started venting out their anger because they believe the show is portraying the people of Tamil Nadu in poor light. This came up because Samantha portrays the role of Raji, who is shown as a rebel and her group might apparently join hands with ISI and all of these go down in Chennai.

Most Tamils are apparently not thrilled to see such a portrayal of their people and their state, especially mentioning what they believe is how the struggles of the Eelam Tamil community is shown in bad light. They are condemning this and to such an extent that even TN Government has now requested Information & Broadcasting minister Prakash Javedkar to ban the show. But is the show actually and really demeaning the Tamil population or their struggles or hurting their sentiments in any way?

Well, first of all, the show is doing none of it. Raj & DK, the creators of the show have time and again mentioned in their interviews that a majority of their creative team consists of people who are Tamil. They both, in fact are closely connected to Tamils, the season 2 has actress Priyamani, Devadarshini Chetan and Ravindra Vijay who are Tamil. Samantha, who is a star in the Tamil film industry is someone who will always have high regards for the state of Tamil Nadu, the place where she was brought up. All of them know the struggles and in no way none of them will ever do anything that can hurt the sentiments of the people.

Now coming to the Eelam Tamil struggle representation that people are talking about. Nowhere in the trailer was anything shown that connects any of it to the struggles that they have undergone. It is clearly a presumption that people are having.

Also stating the outfit worn by Samantha shown in the trailer to the LTTE outfit is similar is a mistake, because it’s absolutely not. One can definitely and clearly see the difference, Samantha’s outfit is a normal camouflage outfit that is used everywhere in films all over. Also, the badges in her uniform shows that it is a fake and fictional organisation and has connection to none of the real ones that people are claiming it has.

The creators have urged fans to wait for the season to drop and to see, because they know they haven’t shown anything that hurt sentiments. Also, it is just a trailer, how can anyone even decipher anything that might happen in the show with just a trailer? The trailer of The Family Man is made in such a way that shows fans what to expect from the upcoming season. The jokes from Srikant, his struggles as a family man and also as an agent, the fight that will go down takes the center stage in the trailer.

Amazon Prime has already been in a lot of controversies already, it is already said that the season was cleared without much snippings, which clearly means the makers have gone through it properly. If that wasn’t the case, Amazon for sure wouldn’t have green lighted it. The outrage doesn’t seem to make sense when you think about everything. Rather than asking for bans, one at the moment just really needs to wait for the upcoming season and see how and what the story is.
