The Great Indian Kapil Show is coming back to Netflix India with a new season this June 21st with Kapil leading the show alongside Archana Puran Singh, Sunil Grover,
Krushna Abhishek, and Kiku Sharda among others.
In the newly launched date announcement video for ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’, host Kapil can be seen in conversation with other cast members about brining something new to the table which is not nonsensical.
Looks like they finally paid some heed to what the viewers have been asking for long. Despite raking in viewing numbers, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ has been criticised ever since it moved to Netflix India leaving its home on satellite television.
People did not like the lame, repetitive jokes which were a result of poor and unfocused writing. Also, other than the set up there was nothing new and exciting that ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ offered to the audience in its post OTT era. Even Sunil Grover’s much awaited comeback wasn’t enough to uplift the show.
While Netflix claims, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ is the first Indian series to trend globally for a month, it is more likely to do more with the episodic nature of the show rather than the actual content.
Now that a third season is making way to Netflix India on 21st June, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ is adding a new feature wherein the fans will get a chance to feature in the show and showcase their quirky, unique and hilarious talents.
What are they even trying to do with this move, turn into a talent show now! It definitely feels like a desperate measure to create user engagement in the name of trying something new.
What’s worrisome here is that this doesn’t help the show in any way. The need of the hour is better jokes, backed by intelligent writing, that connect with the OTT audience which is different than the TV audience ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ once catered to. While some buffoonery once in a while is enjoyable it cannot be the sole riding thing and the sooner Netflix and ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ recognise this the better. After all it’s a talented bunch that has entertained the Indian audience unlike anything and seeing it failing to find that click now is disappointing.
