The Indrani Mukerjea Story CBI Case: Netflix Defers Disputed Series

By Binged Bureau - Feb 22, 2024 @ 03:02 pm
The Indrani Mukerjea Story CBI Case: Netflix Defers Disputed Series

Streaming giant Netflix has postponed the release of its controversial documentary series ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’. The series was to release tomorrow, 23rd February, 2024. But in deference to the wishes of the presiding judges of the Bombay High Court, Netflix has agreed to postpone the release of ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’, until the CBI gets a chance to present its side of the case before the honorable judges of the Bombay High Court.

Since 29th February is the date that the court has scheduled the hearing of the CBI’s plea for stay on the release of the series, Netflix has agreed not to stream ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’ before that date. Netflix has also invited the judges on the case to watch the documentary series themselves, in order to better judge the merit in the CBI’s case.

The documentary series ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’ is based on the CBI case against media maven Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of murdering her own daughter, Sheena Bora. Indrani Mukerjea is currently out on bail, after spending 7 years in jail for the murder.

The case against Indrani Mukerjea is subjudice, with the CBI still investigating the nitty-gritty of it, along with interrogating more witnesses in the murder. The CBI contends that airing a documentary series on Indrani Mukerjea, which includes one-on-one chats with key witnesses, is tantamount to tampering with evidence.

The CBI had first filed their plea for a stay on Netflix’s streaming of ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’ in a special court. But the court rejected their appeal and gave Netflix the go-ahead to stream the series as scheduled. The CBI then approached the Bombay High Court on the matter. The special bench of Justice Revati Mohite-Dere and Justice Manjusha A Deshpande of the Bombay High Court ruled that the CBI must be given a chance to present their case in court, and also be allowed to watch the series for themselves.

Justice Dere ordered Netflix to postpone the streaming of ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’, saying, “It can be deferred by a week, heavens are not going to fall. They (CBI) are not saying postpone it, we are saying it. They have not even opened the argument. But till then, you will not release the series”.

As reported by Binged earlier, the documentary series ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’ has become a bone of contention between the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) and Netflix. The CBI wants a stay on the release of the documentary series, as the series showcases interviews with five key witnesses in the case, including the most important witness Mikhail Bora, who identified the spot where his sister Sheena Bora’s body was burnt by Indrani Mukerjea and her accomplices.

The HC bench recorded that “Netflix has no objection to the suggestion that CBI be given an opportunity to view. The hearing is postponed to Thursday. The aforesaid petition will be heard after screening, Kadam says it will not be aired till the next date.”

Finally, the question to be asked in the light of these latest developments is whether the documentary series ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’ will ever get to see the light of day, quite like how Satyam scam accused Ramalinga Raju’s episode in Netflix’s ‘Bad Boy Billionaires: India’ never ever got released.

Stay tuned to Binged for further updates on the intriguing and controversial developments on Netflix’s ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’.
