The Kerala Story follows the success of The Kashmir Files in pinching the emotions of the people who had been in a state of dormancy. Even after being a highly successful blockbuster, the movie was almost abandoned by the major OTT players and there was a lot of ruckus about it. But, the movie is finally getting released and not without trouble.
The movie is finally making its way to OTT screens on Zee5 after facing significant delays. Scheduled for release on February 16th, the movie has sparked controversy due to its contentious subject matter.
The plot revolves around a group of women from Kerala who are coerced into converting to Islam and joining the Islamic State. Marketed as a true story, the film delves into the sensitive issue of “love jihad,” claiming that thousands of Hindu women from Kerala have been converted to Islam and recruited into the Islamic State.
Upon its theatrical release on May 5, 2023, “The Kerala Story” grossed a staggering ₹303.97 crore which is difficult even for big superstars. Despite its commercial success, the film has been subject to intense scrutiny and criticism for its portrayal of sensitive social and religious themes.
In anticipation of its OTT release, reports suggest that “The Kerala Story” will undergo significant edits to comply with content regulations and mitigate potential backlash. Obviously, Zee5 won’t want the fate of Annapoorani.
But but but, the report is not final and there might be no such cuts in the digital version.
As the movie prepares for its digital premiere, all eyes are on Zee5 and its approach to presenting this contentious narrative to a wider audience. Let’s see where the cuts are.
