As The Mandalorian Season 3 approaches its global release date, the curiosity and excitement of Star Wars fans are also increasing. They are desperate to find out about the characters that will return in the third season, including Cara Dune (portrayed by Gina Carano). How will Season 3 deal with the departure of the fan-favourite bounty hunter? Let’s find out!
Carano made the headlines after her controversial remarks about Nazis, Jews, and America’s divided political climate back in February 2021. Her comments caused tons of drama on social media, forcing Mandalorian makers to dismiss her from the show. LucasFilm addressed the issue by releasing a statement:
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Fans last witnessed Cara Dune rescuing Din Djarin and Grogu from the hands of Moff Gideon and his Imperial group. She also became a marshal in the New Republic. However, the character did not appear in ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ series.
In a recent conversation with Deadline, The Mandalorian EPs Rick Famuyiwa and Dave Filoni shed some light on Cara Dune’s departure from the show. They revealed that the Gina Carano scenario was on the minds of the show’s writers.
Famuyiwa will helm three episodes in the upcoming season. This is what he said about Dune’s departure: “It was something that was discussed as we knew it was going to have an impact on the show, but at the same time, what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters — Din Djarin and Grogu– so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians.”
Upon being asked about Cara Dune’s future in the show, Filoni replied:
“It’s a big galaxy and we have many characters in it. Many characters are fighting for their screen time, we’ll just have to see as the season unfolds what the adventures are, but it’s a great character, someone who was vital to Din Djarin’s beginnings; we’ll see if he has evolved beyond that.”
It seems clear that Gina Carano will not return to the third season of The Mandalorian. The Star Wars franchise treasures a lot of fan-favourite characters. That is why Cara Dune’s departure does not seem that big. But fans loved the character as she was new and badass, and brought something new to the table. Plus, she shared great chemistry with Din Djarin.
Furthermore, Season 3 will revolve around the Mandalorians and the Mandalorian saga. Djarin’s journey has taken a significant turn after his encounter with Bo-Katan. The former is the current wielder of the Darksaber. On the other hand, Bo-Katan needs that Darksaber to rule the Mandalore. Will they work together or go one-on-one with each other in the upcoming season? In addition, how do other Mandalorians fit into this scenario? We have to wait for Season 3 to find out!
The Mandalorian Season 3 will release on March 1 on Disney+ Hotstar. Stay tuned for more updates.
