‘The Marvels’ Fails At Escaping From An Old MCU Formula

‘The Marvels’ Fails At Escaping From An Old MCU Formula

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in existence for nearly 15 years now. And the majority of its films and TV shows are nothing short of gems in terms of quality entertainment. This is one of the major reasons why most MCU projects have turned out successful, both critically and commercially. However, the grand superhero franchise has been receiving strong criticism for relying heavily on the traditional ‘MCU formula’ since its inception. It seems like Nia DaCosta’s upcoming directional feature, The Marvels, may possess the same formula as well.

What do we mean by the conventional ‘MCU formula’? Well, it is a formula that has aided the MCU in becoming a global sensation. This formula enables (or forces, who knows?) Marvel filmmakers cultivate projects that consist of key elements, such as the standard MCU humour, CGI-relying action sequences, integration of mid and post-credits scenes, hints that connect projects to future MCU entries, and more. The Marvels may have this formula as well.

Talking with Vanity Fair, DaCosta disclosed that The Marvels is pretty much a Kevin Feige film. “It is a Kevin Feige production, it’s his movie.” Her words indicate that the forthcoming Brie Larson starrer will not bring any revolution to the superhero franchise or change to the same old MCU formula. Before 2021, this formula worked just fine for Marvel Studios. However, the studio’s decision to increase the number of MCU projects in 2021 started decaying the magic of the old MCU formula. How? Well, many fans are bored with that approach now. It is not like Marvel Studios did not try anything new at all. It went out of its comfort zone (maybe way too out) for some instalments, such as Eternals. But they were not received positively among the fans. This shows that a large portion of the Marvel fanbase wants the studio to keep things the way they were.

It will be intriguing to see if The Marvels provides something truly extraordinary and unique or takes the shelter of the same old MCU formula.

Another thing that can complicate things for Feige’s team is the massive budget behind The Marvels. The film’s production budget mounted up to $274.8 million but was reduced to $219.8 million, thanks to the subsidy of $55 million provided by the UK government. Still, it needs to collect over $550 million globally to emerge as a profitable venture for Marvel Studios and Disney.

The Marvels stars Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, Zawe Ashton, Samuel L. Jackson, and more. It will arrive in theatres globally on November 10. Stay tuned for more updates.
