Like many recent MCU projects, The Marvels can be considered as another failure for the superhero franchise. Currently, the latest Brie Larson starrer has a fresh score of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is very low compared to MCU’s standards. In addition, many box office experts have already predicted the film’s doom at the global box office, given the hate surrounding the leading lady, Marvel Studios’ inability to promote the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and the film’s heavy budget. However, The Marvels’ post-credits scene will surely catch you off guard.
SPOILER WARNING!!!
The post-credits scene of The Marvels shows Monica Rambeau lying on a hospital bed in a different universe after making the ultimate sacrifice in the climax. After gaining consciousness, she sees a woman who looks like her mother, Maria. However, the latter confirms that she has never met Monica before. Soon, the camera shifts to a muscular, blue, and hairy man donning a white lab coat. Yup, he is Dr Hank McCoy, aka Beast, straight from Fox’s X-Men universe. Kelsey Grammer reprises the role after appearing in The Last Stand (2006) and Days of Future Past (2014). McCoy also talks about Charles (who must be Professor Charles Xavier).
Monica is now in a universe that has the X-Men. Plus, the film’s final shot teases Maria Rambeau’s red and white costume with the iconic ‘Binary’ emblem. It seems like Maria’s alternate version in the post-credits scene is the superhero Binary. However, Carol Danvers is Binary in the comics. The character made its comic debut through Uncanny X-Men #164. In this storyline, Carol gets transformed into Binary by the experiments conducted by the alien race, the Brood, while being a part of an important mission with X-Men.
Is this the same Maria Rambeau from Multiverse of Madness? Nope! That variant of Maria died, courtesy of Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch. It seems like Binary resides in a different universe with no connection to the events of MoM.
Coming back to the X-Men, seeing Beast in The Marvels was not completely surprising, given the rumours about X-Men’s inclusion in the film circulating on the internet and social media. However, that post-credits scene makes us wonder if the Nia DaCosta directional was the perfect film for it. Did the film really deserve this cameo? Or was it Marvel Studios’ strategy to generate more hype about the film? Call it whatever you want, guys! But it felt really nice to see McCoy again on the big screen!
Considering the current status of the MCU, the timing of the ‘official’ arrival of the X-Men in the superhero franchise looks a bit odd. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in shambles right now. And the only glue that is holding the franchise together is Loki Season 2, which has restored many fans’ belief in the MCU. We expect Marvel to regain some much-needed stability and order by the time we reach Deadpool 3, which is the only Marvel flick scheduled for 2024. The Marvels is currently running in theatres. Stay tuned for more updates.
