Last night, the list of nominations for the 2023 edition of the prestigious Emmy Awards were announced. While most of the nominees which were announced yesterday were as expected, one worthy name was conspicuous by its absence after all the nominees were out. We are talking about the nominations for the best ‘Lead Actor in a Drama Series’ category at Emmy 2023.
And one actor which should have been definitely included in the list is Paddy Considine, whose riveting portrayal as the King of the seven kingdoms in the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series ‘House of the Dragon’ was amongst the finest in recent times. The English actor’s omission in the aforementioned Emmy category is not only shocking but, arguably, it’s the biggest snub at this year’s Emmy nominations.
Paddy Considine’s highly surprising omission at Emmys 2023 nominations makes us think whether Emmy nominations are more or less based on an actor’s or a title’s popularity among the audiences or whether it’s about how good an actor’s performance actually is. Because this omission does not make any sense at all. Not that other nominees in that category do not deserve their Emmy nominations. They are all terrific. But Paddy Considine’s name should have been there, even if it meant that there was an extra nominee in the best ‘Lead Actor in a Drama Series’ Emmy category. Why isn’t an extra nominee name possible when there is such a deserving contender?
Some time back, George R. R. Martin, author of the riveting source material for ‘House of the Dragon’ series, opined on one of his blog posts that Paddy Considine, who has essayed the role of King Viserys in HOTD Season-11, was worthy of an Emmy award for his splendid performance in the show’s eighth episode alone. And we totally agree with that. Paddy Considine had hit the ball out of the park in that episode. A new benchmark in the history of small-screen performances indeed.
The ‘House of the Dragon’ series is based on some segments of George R. R. Martin’s 2018 fantasy novel ‘Fire & Blood’ and the goings-on takes place around two centuries before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ and revolves around the beginning of the end of House Targaryen. ‘House of the Dragon’ Season-1 is streaming on the Jio Cinema OTT platform in India.
