Indian filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar, who was born on this day, instantly came into the limelight after his cult debut film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ came out in the year 2001. Thereafter, he went on to direct the Kargil war-based film ‘Lakshya’, SRK’s ‘Don’ and its sequel ‘Don 2’. But one film directed by Farhan Akhtar which has escaped the attention of most movie lovers is an AIDS awareness short film titled ‘Positive’.
With a runtime of just under 19 minutes, the sensitively executed yet almost unheard-of film ‘Positive’ was released in the year 2007. The film is narrated from the perspective of a man named Abhijit Soni (played by the talented Arjun Mathur), who gets to know about his father’s (Boman Irani) extramarital relationship and is disgusted by it.
Later, he relocates to Cape Town to avoid interacting with his father. But he decides to return to India after he learns that his father has contracted AIDS – in order to be with him during these difficult times. The film also features veteran actress Shabana Azmi in the role of Abhijit’s mother.
With a film like ‘Positive’, Farhan Akhtar showcased why he is amongst the finest young directors of present times. And it’s rather surprising that he has directed just five films in his career spanning more than two decades (including ‘Positive’). This was due to his inclination and foray into acting.
Farhan Akhtar’s next film as a director is the female centric road movie ‘Jee Le Zaraa’ featuring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles.
