After a whole year of speculation on will he, won’t he, Bollywood hunk Hrithik Roshan is officially out of the Indian remake of British spy thriller ‘The Night Manager’. Buzz on the ground is that Aditya Roy Kapur has taken his place as the lead actor of the show, though there’s no announcement from the makers yet. Joining him in the primary cast of The Night Manager remake is evergreen actor Anil Kapoor. Kapoor will play the main villain in the limited series.
When the Indian remake of ‘The Night Manager‘ was greenlit at Disney Plus Hotstar, Hrithik Roshan and Manoj Bajpayee were to play the lead protagonist and antagonist respectively in the show. Then Manoj Bajpayee dropped out because of date issues. And now it Hrithik Roshan is also out from the production that would have marked his debut in the OTT space.
Aditya Roy Kapur will reportedly play the character of Jonathan Pine, a night manager at a posh hotel turned spy for British intelligence who helps bring down an international arms dealer. Tom Hiddleston had essayed the role in the original. Anil Kapoor will essay the role of the primary antagonist, Richard Roper, played by Hugh Laurie in the original.
Of course, the setting and narrative of the show will be modified to suit Indian sensibilities. The original series traversed across the globe, from Cairo to Switzerland, and Turkey to England. It remains to be seen whether the Indian remake will be a globetrotter like the original.
There are several other high profile roles in the original – the ones played by the stellar actress Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki, for instance. The makers of the Indian version of ‘The Night Manager’ would do well to make carefully thought out choices for the aforementioned roles, in order to elevate the series to a classy watch. Banijay Asia and Preity Zinta are co-producers on the show, slated to stream on Disney Plus Hotstar. Sandeep Modi, who’s earlier directed the hit Disney Plus Hotstar series ‘Aarya’, will helm the Indian remake of ‘The Night Manager’.
The British original ‘The Night Manager’ is an adaptation of prolific spy novels writer John Le Carre’s 1993 work. It was directed by filmmaker Susanne Bier (Bird Box), and starred actors Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, David Harewood, Tom Hollander, and Elizabeth Debicki.
