Globally renowned entertainment content review aggregator portal ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ has recently compiled an elite list of ‘Certified Fresh’ movies of the year 2021 as per their inhouse ‘Tomatometer’ score. As per Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Certified Fresh’ are those movies that attain a minimum ‘Tomatometer’ score of 75%, which in turn, is based on a specified number of critics reviews.
A total of 139 ‘Certified Fresh’ film titles have been included in the latest Rotten Tomatoes ‘Best Movies of 2021’ list. And out of these movies, only one Indian movie was able to make its way to the coveted Rotten Tomatoes list – ‘The Disciple’.
The critically acclaimed Marathi language musical drama Indian film ‘The Disciple’ is currently placed on an impressive 37th rank out of a total of 139 titles and boasts of 96% ‘Tomatometer’ score based on 45 critics reviews. It has been written and directed by Chaitanya Tamhane and executive produced by ‘Gravity’ director Alfonso Cuaron.
Last year, the film participated in many international film festivals including the Venice Film Festival where it secured multiple wins including the ‘Best Screenplay’ award. Thereafter, the film was acquired by OTT giant Netflix in April 2021 and that’s the reason it’s there on this Rotten Tomatoes list which includes titles only from the year 2021.
Chaitanya Tamhane had previously helmed the slice-of-life drama ‘Court’ that explored the legal system through the lens of the trial of an aging activist. While ‘The Disciple’ narrates the story of Sharad Nerulkar (played by Aditya Modak), who has dedicated his life to become an Indian classical music vocalist. However, he begins to think that, despite his devotion, will he achieve the level of excellence he is aiming for.
On this Rotten Tomatoes best films list, ‘The Disciple’ is just behind another critics’ darling ‘CODA’, which is currently placed at the 36th spot. Some other popular films on the list are ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ (Rank 135), ‘Black Widow’ (Rank 112), ‘Free Guy’ (Rank 106), ‘Nobody’ (Rank 102), ‘Vivo’ (Rank 100), ‘Oxygen’ (Rank 91), ‘The Green Knight’ (Rank 85), ‘The Suicide Squad’ (Rank 64), ‘A Quite Place Part II’ (Rank 63), ‘Judas and The Black Messiah’ (Rank 29), and ‘The Father’ (Rank 10).
It really needs some class and quality content to find a spot on the Rotten Tomatoes best films list, and to be placed alongside some of the world’s best films. And Chaitanya Tamhane’s ‘The Disciple’ has certainly got whatever it takes to be up there.
