Ammy Virk‘s ‘Challe Mundiyan‘ is going to stream on 23rd of September on Sony Liv. It is one of the many Punjabi titles that are being released on OTT platforms.
Zee5 being the platform with most Punjabi releases in a year is the go-to place for all movie lovers of this language. Zee5 has released a few movies like ‘Mere Viyah Nahi Karona Tere Naal’, the superhit ‘Qismat 2’, ‘Thappa’, ‘Sass Meri Ne Munda Jameya’ this year and it has a few hits from 2021 too. ‘Jinne Jamme Saare Nikamme’, ‘Siyasat’,’Happy Happy Ho Gaya’ are a few of them.
Amazon Prime Video has an impressive amount of Punjabi titles being released with consistency. ‘Saunkan Saunkne’, ‘Jatt Brothers’, and ‘Lover’ are the movies streamed on Amazon Prime in 2022.
Netflix has the least amount of Punjabi releases with the last film streamed being ‘Kaake Da Vyah’ in 2019 and a few films like ‘Khido Khundi’, ‘Asees’, ‘Manje Bistre’ before that.
There is a rise in the production of Punjabi films released directly on OTT. That is a great scope for the regional films as well as the OTT platforms. Films in regional languages will attract more audiences and the viewership will increase. Moreover there is a certain part of the audience that is not very comfortable with movies and shows from other languages. Making more movies in regional languages breaks the barrier and connects that part of the audience to the platform thus increasing the viewership. OTT, being the future of the entertainment industry, sometimes provides more opportunity to the makers than theatres do. There is no doubt that the increasing demand and supply of Punjabi web films is going to affect the industry positively and massively.
