In a year where audiences are not really into the theatrical releases, Bhool Chuk Maaf couldn’t expect a fate where they could have been successful. In a best-case scenario, they would have been stuck as a forgotten mediocre film, but things went south. Though the film has grossed shy of 65 Cr, it could not show its full potential.
Directed by Karan Sharma and starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi in their first on-screen pairing, Bhool Chuk Maaf had all the ingredients of a compelling, quirky comedy. A time-loop plot, a stellar cast of supporting legends like Sanjay Mishra and Seema Pahwa, and a heartland setting that always finds takers in the Indian audience.
But instead of being allowed to shine on its own merit, the film was dragged through a messy back-and-forth between OTT and theatrical plans that reduced it to collateral damage in a bigger business war.
Let’s call it what it is, this release debacle made a complete mockery out of the theatrical experience.
Initially scheduled for a direct Prime Video release on May 16, 2025, Maddock Films changed course after PVR Inox pulled out its legal sword, accusing the makers of breaching a theatrical agreement. The result? A Rs 60-crore loss, a hurried two-week theatre run beginning May 23, and a digital premiere already scheduled for June 6. (A span of two weeks)
So, what was the point of the theatrical release?
Such half-hearted commitments only dilute the credibility of cinemas. If a film is going to hit OTT less than two weeks later, why should audiences pay for a theatre ticket at all? This isn’t just bad planning, it’s disrespectful to the audience, the exhibitors, and the idea of theatrical storytelling itself.
By trying to play both sides, Bhool Chuk Maaf ended up satisfying no one. Theatres got a rushed rollout. OTT got a film whose buzz had already faded. And audiences? They were left confused, cheated, and underwhelmed.
This isn’t a one-off mistake, it’s a symptom of an industry losing its grip on what really matters: trust, clarity, and a respect for the viewer’s time and money.
