After the brilliantly mind-blowing teaser of Matrix 4 released a couple of days ago, Twitter users around the world have been going on a “social media frenzy”. Unlike most teasers, this brilliant fourth-wall breaking teaser (which can be watched on https://thechoiceisyours.whatisthematrix.com/uk/) blew our minds with its “clip-roulette” and “time-stamp marking” programming within the promo. The teaser could be viewed in two forms which were split into the iconic Red Pill/ Blue Pill options and it didn’t disappoint (an understatement). And most of us would have been happy with just that, for a couple of weeks at least; especially for a movie that is only releasing late in December. But no, along with the teaser came the release date of the trailer – which dropped less than half an hour ago. Check out the trailer at the end of this article.
We don’t get a crazy fourth-wall breaking trailer like its predecessor promotional video this time around, but it is still an exciting video. One of the first call-backs we see is the black cat, which is followed by the name (another call-back), “Thomas”. For those of you who don’t remember (or know), Thomas Anderson is Neo’s birth name. Thomas is currently talking to a psychiatrist (played by Neil Patrick Harris) about his dreams.
Unlike the previous films, however, the Matrix in this movie seems to be set in the distant future (The Matrix from the original three films was set in the year 1999). From what we can understand, Neo has gone back into the Matrix to find his one true love, Trinity, but he seems to have either forgot how he got there in the process or the machines took away his memory. We see a younger, alternate Morpheus triggering his powers and helping him remember. The trailer is quite cinematic but still manages to remain vague – which is a good thing. We don’t want to know the story right off the bat either.
We also see Neo eating blue pills a lot, throughout the trailer, meaning that he is suppressing his memories – we do not know if it is by choice or not, yet. The end of ‘Matrix 3’ has left a lot of things vague since Neo made peace with the machines on Zion’s behalf. Did he get replugged in? Or did he go into the Matrix voluntarily? And how is Trinity getting powers in the trailer? Thankfully, the film drops in 3 months. Now is the tough part – the waiting.
The Matrix Ressurections will premier in theatres around the globe on December 22nd 2021.
