Globally renowned reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes has recently announced the Golden Tomato awards for films and shows from the year 2021 including best movies, best limited release movies, best TV series, etc. Moreover, the website has also honored the best streaming movies that came out in 2021 on various OTT platforms globally.
Out of the twenty top titles under the ‘Best Streaming Movies 2021’ category, Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato award has been bagged by the Benedict Cumberbatch starrer Netflix film ‘The Power of the Dog’ (Rank 1).
And in a piece of fantastic news for Indian cinephiles, out of these twenty titles, Rotten Tomatoes has also honored two Indian movies namely ‘The White Tiger’ and ‘The Disciple’ in the same ‘Best Streaming Movies 2021’ category.
While ‘The White Tiger’ is in the 17th place, ‘The Disciple’ is placed on the 20th spot in a list that also includes international movie titles like ‘Coda’ (Rank 2), ‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’ (Rank 3), ‘Luca’ (Rank 5), and ‘No Sudden Move’ (Rank 19), etc. It’s a matter of pride for Indians that two Indian movies have also found their way to the coveted international listicle.

The White Tiger (Streaming on Netflix)
An adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name, the film’s plot revolves around an underprivileged but cunning villager Balram Halwai (played by Adarsh Gaurav), who is brainwashed by his poverty-stricken community to be a lifelong servant. To fulfill his aspirations, he travels to Dhanbad to become a driver for his affluent landlord’s son (Rajkummar Rao) and his wife (Priyanka Chopra). But his life suddenly takes a U-turn after a harsh truth about the master-servant relationship dawns upon him.
The Disciple (Streaming on Netflix)
Helmed by Chaitanya Tamhane, this critically acclaimed Marathi film narrates the story of Sharad Nerulkar (played by Aditya Modak), who has dedicated his life to becoming an Indian classical music vocalist. However, he begins to think that, despite his devotion, will he achieve the level of excellence he is aiming for. ‘Gravity’ director Alphonso Cuaron had executive produced the film.
