K-Dramas trending consistently on Netflix Top 10 is nothing new. We’ve seen it with “Squid Game” and “All of Us are Dead”. The latest additions to the Hallyu phenomena is ” A Business Proposal ” and “Twenty Five Twenty One”. But what is different is unlike Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead, these shows were not limited series.
The shows dropped weekly episodes with the former having 12 and the later having 16 episodes respectively. It’s been more than a week since both the shows aired their finale, but they’ve not left Netflix India Top 10 even now. The last time a weekly episode format Korean Drama did this well on Netflix India was when Vincenzo aired. Now this is a privilege largely enjoyed by Netflix Hollywood Action films or Indian films precisely.
“Business Proposal” begins with the story of Shin Ha-ri, who agrees to go on a blind date to help scare away her friend’s perspective suitor, unbeknownst of the fact that he is the CEO of the company Kang Tae-Mo where she is employed. The romantic comedy follows the blossoming romance between the two, despite Ha-ri having taken on a false identity. Take any random Korean office-romance and amplify the meet-cutes by 10, and you have Business Proposal. One of the major reasons for the show’s success is it’s flawless writing, impeccable star-cast and their rofl-worthy comic timing. Kim Se-jeong’s comic timing in particular is off-the-charts. It also helps when even the parallel leads and their love-tracks are extremely charming.
“Twenty Five Twenty One” marked the return of Kim Tae-ri to K-Drama world after her super successful “Mr Sunshine” in 2016. A coming off age story of love between South Korea’s leading Fencer Na Hee-do and UBS Sports Reporter Back Yi-jin, the show is everything you need to feel motivated and nostalgic. The very relatable friends-gang of Hee-do/Yi-jin also add to the feel good factor. Although the finale was a little underwhelming (on the realistic side), the show is still worthier than the kind of awfully written films and series Netflix India generates.
With Bollywood and to a large extent Hollywood taking a back-seat from writing good rom-coms they were once known for and churning one after another stagnated action films and remakes, Korean Drama Industry has definitely tapped the market not only in India but also worldwide. Who doesn’t love a well written feel-good mushy romantic comedy? Well all do.
