Two Telugu films – Satyadev’s Thimmarusu and Teja Sajja’s Ishq have been released today in the theaters. These two films are the first releases from the Telugu film industry after the COVID second wave. While Thimmarusu has got decent reviews, Ishq reviews are not up to the mark.
Meanwhile, there are reports that theaters in Andhra Pradesh will be shutting down from August 6th as a mark of protest against the local government for untenable ticket rates. That means both the films will only have one week run at the box office. At this juncture, it may be wise on the part of these filmmakers to negotiate a better deal for an early OTT release.
Sun Network holds the satellite and digital rights of Ishq. So, Sun Nxt will be the streaming partner. Usually, Sun Network prioritizes satellite rights over digital. So, we are not sure if there is a chance of an early OTT release. In the case of Thimmarusu, that is very much possible because Netflix has done that in the past with Nagarjuna’s Wild Dog.
Satyadev’s previous film, Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya skipped its theatrical release and arrived directly on Netflix. That was way back in the COVID first wave.
