‘Thirteen Lives’ or ‘Thai Cave Rescue’: Which One to Watch on OTT?

‘Thirteen Lives’ or ‘Thai Cave Rescue’: Which One to Watch on OTT?

The incredible real-life story of the Tham Luang cave rescue incident that happened in Thailand in 2018 has been brought to the screen multiple times in the past few years. And the latest two attempts are Ron Howard’s movie ‘Thirteen Lives’ and a six-part series titled ‘Thai Cave Rescue’. While ‘Thirteen Lives’ is streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform, ‘Thai Cave Rescue’ is streaming on Netflix. Considering the same subject matter, in case you are wondering which title to watch on OTT, continue reading.

Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Thirteen Lives’ has been directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13). The film follows a junior football team comprising twelve boys, who, along with their assistant coach, were trapped in a cave for 18 days because of severe monsoon flooding. Later, two British divers found the group alive a few kilometres away from the cave mouth. The roles of the two British divers John Volanthen and Richard Stanton have been essayed by Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen, respectively. And Joel Edgerton has essayed the role of anaesthetist Richard Harris.

And now, coming straight to the point: Which title on the Tham Luang cave rescue incident should you watch on OTT: ‘Thirteen Lives’ or ‘Thai cave Rescue’?

As you can see above, Prime Video’s ‘Thirteen Lives’ features a super talented cast and adeptly executed by a filmmaker of Ron Howard’s calibre. The film is currently ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 87% critics’ score. The audience score is even higher at 95%. Moreover, the movie also holds a good IMDb user rating of 7.8/10.

On the other hand, the Netflix series ‘Thai Cave Rescue’ holds a decent critics’ score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes and an IMDb score of 7.4.

As per several reviews from critics and audiences, Ron Howard’s ‘Thirteen Lives’ is more engaging and gripping in the way the story unfolds. And the ‘Thai Cave Rescue’ series is more detailed and has one unique thing which the movie doesn’t – it’s told from the perspective of the soccer team. This was made possible because the makers had bagged exclusive rights to the Wild Boars soccer team’s story through a deal.

But from a filmmaking point of view, for gripping storytelling, and if you’re short of time, Ron Howard’s ‘Thirteen Lives’ seems to be the title which you should first watch on Amazon Prime Video.

And in case you have already seen ‘Thirteen Lives’ and liked it and are curious for a more exhaustive account of the much-publicized Tham Luang cave rescue incident from the soccer team’s point of view, then you can also watch the six-episode ‘Thai Cave Rescue’ series on Netflix with a runtime of around 60 minutes each. But we recommend you first watch ‘Thirteen Lives’ on Amazon Prime Video. You can also watch the official trailers for ‘Thirteen Lives’ and ‘Thai Cave Rescue’ below to help you decide which one you can watch first on OTT.
