Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay is one of the biggest authors in Bengali right now and he also has a huge list of movies adapted from his works. Renowned filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh and Aparna Sen have made movies based on Mukhopadhyay’s books. And now it is the turn of his debut Novel.
‘Ghunpoka’ is Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s first novel and tells the story of a man named Shyam who lives in Kolkata and is fired from his job. He finds himself long in the city and feels humiliated for his existence. ‘Ghunpoka’ employs the stream of consciousness method in writing which will make it very difficult to adapt to an audiovisual medium.
The movie will be directed by Palash Dey. Palash Dey is known for directing films like ‘Taranga’ and ‘Asukhwala’. Another film of his titled ‘Ostad’ is in the post-production currently.
The director is passionate about the project and he secured the rights to the novel last year. He has stated, “I’ve had initial discussions with a few production companies, but I’m still looking for the right producer. I am in no rush to release this project.”
The difficulty of the story does not concern Palash and he takes it as a challenge. There are many instances of difficult stories being adapted with great mastery in world cinema and he thinks Ghunpoka too will be one like them.
