Some of the recent additions of actors to superhero franchises have taught us that we should not neglect the power of fan casting. Superhero fans often rally fan campaigns for their chosen actor or actress to bag the part. We have also witnessed performers becoming a part of fan campaigns to improve their chances of getting a superhero part in the past. For instance, Ryan Reynolds extensively campaigned to play Deadpool before actually receiving the opportunity to portray the mercenary with a big mouth in Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the first Deadpool flick. Now, another case of fan casting has emerged. This time, superhero fans want Bryan Cranston to portray Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s DCU.
Anyone who has ever watched Breaking Bad can agree that Bryan Cranston is a perfect fit for the role of Lex Luthor. Although, the actor has declared his fan casting as Superman’s arch-nemesis the “laziness of fan casting”.
Cranston recently appeared on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast, where he addressed the matter:
“Was it all just the laziness of fan casting that they either saw the great mustache or the bald head back in the Heisenberg days that you were always fan casted as Lex Luthor or Jim Gordon? Was there ever any real conversations about playing those live-action characters?”
Cranston might have displayed his reluctance to play Luthor in the interview. Still, he is a perfect fit to play the villain.
We all have seen Cranston’s remarkable acting range in Breaking Bad. The way he transformed into a ruthless drug lord from a mild-mannered chemistry teacher was phenomenal. He possesses the ability to captivate the audience with his performance. He often brought a lot of intensity to his performance as Walter White in Vince Gilligan’s masterpiece. He can use the same intensity to portray Lex Luthor on the big screen.
In addition, Bryan Cranston has a dedicated fan base. His popularity and wide range of acting skills can take DCU to new heights.
Lex Luthor’s multifaceted personality has been explored to great levels in the comics. The character is represented as an obsessive and ambitious man who often suffers from inner turmoil.
