Coming-of-age movies from the male POV are quite common, so much so that it is a whole genre of their own. However, there haven’t been many movies on the same from the point of view of a girl. Our weekend watch recommendation for you this week is one such hilarious and eventually heartwarming movie.
‘June‘ is a coming-of-age romantic comedy directed by Ahammed Khabeer and starring Rajisha Vijayan. The movie moves on a light note and follows June’s( Rajisha) life starting from her 11th std all the way to her marriage. And alongside her are her parents and friends, all of them evolving alongside her as time passes by. If you’ve seen and loved ‘Ohm Shanthi Oshaana’ starring Nazriya Nazima and Nivin Pauly, this movie is right up your alley.
The movie is not one of those woke-type films but is a heartwarming tale. It doesn’t come off as preachy or aspirational, because it doesn’t try to be. It is June’s story and her own. Her strengths and flaws, her highs and lows, her love and life, the movie is a simple story of her life, captured in its various moments. And personifying the character to the tee is Rajisha. Winner of the Kerala State Award for Best Actress for her debut film, the actress through the movie re-established herself as a performer who is here to stay.
You will laugh with her. You will sympathize with her. You will cry with her. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster packaged as a fun ride. Filled with elements that ensure you get a fresh rush of nostalgia(especially Keralite 90s kids), the movie’s magic can be attributable to the direction of Khabeer. Ably supported by heartening music by Ifthi, the movie was bankrolled by the producers of Prime Video’s ‘Home’.
